OEBC Club History
Founded in 1935, Orpington Excelsior Bowls Club has played at Poverest Recreation Ground since its inception. The green was constructed in 1934, with Alderman A.G.A. Slater playing a key role in securing its use. Initially a male-only club, women were first allowed as associate members in 1970, before being granted full membership status in 1988.
Membership steadily grew from 35 in 1965 to a peak of 111 in 1997, reflecting the increasing popularity of the sport. Facilities were initially basic, with members using shared football and cricket changing rooms. Significant improvements began in 1982 with the purchase of the current pavilion, which was originally a school building. A bar was added in 1985, further enhancing the club's social environment, while a toilet block followed in 1988. To aid maintenance of the green, an automatic watering system was installed in 1993, ensuring consistent playing conditions.
A major turning point came in 1987 with the formation of the Bromley Council Bowls Clubs Association, which advocated for clubs using public greens. This led to a management agreement in 1993 that gave clubs responsibility for maintaining their greens, with financial support from the council. The agreement was renewed in 2003, helping to secure the long-term future of the sport within the borough.
Excelsior has a strong tradition of competitive success. The Club has participated in the North West Kent Bowls League since its inception in 1986, winning League One and the N.W. Kent Cup on multiple occasions. Many individual players have also excelled in competitions, with Mike Ruffhead winning the Men’s Championship a record nine times, while Eunice Pain holds the Ladies’ Championship record with ten victories. Other notable achievements include wins in county and district competitions, showcasing the high level of skill among club members.
Beyond competition, Excelsior has always placed a strong emphasis on camaraderie and social events. Club competitions have been held annually since 1936, with only one interruption in 1941. Friendly matches against local teams are a key part of the calendar, with away fixtures including trips to New Romney, Broadstairs, Eastbourne, and Hastings.
Fundraising has also been an important aspect of club life. Efforts have included raffles, auctions, and a second-hand goods stall in Orpington Village Hall during the late 1980s. The Club has regularly supported local and national charities, such as Harris Hospiscare, Threshers Nursery, Macmillan Cancer Support, and Breast Cancer Care, demonstrating its commitment to the wider community.
As Orpington Excelsior Bowls Club marks over 90 years of history, it continues to thrive, supported by dedicated members who uphold its traditions. With a rich past and a promising future, the Club remains a cornerstone of the local bowling community.
